Mt. Shasta Regional 135 MILE RACE TRAIL DESCRIPTION (YELLOW)
Competitors will be notified promptly of any change in the course or times.
The Medicine Lake Volcanic Region -  US Geological Survey

The Mt. Shasta Regional 135 mile sled dog race consists of three legs covering a distance of 135 miles.  You will travel over snowmobile trails covering a variety of elevations and terrain. The race start/finish will be at the USDA Forest Service Deer Mountain / Chuck Best Memorial Snow Park, just north of Weed, California, off Hwy. 97.

Race Start:  9:00 AM Sat., Feb. 26  Race Fee: $150.00  Purse: $5000.00

There will be two checkpoints along the way.   Water will not be available at the checkpoints.

Leg One covers a distance of 25.4 miles to the Pilgrim Creek Trailhead.  The first checkpoint is unassisted, but your drop bags and five gallons of water are allowed to be used or picked up.  Mushers can rest their teams anywhere along the trail or at check points.

Leg Two covers a distance of 48.9 miles.  You will depart out of Pilgrim Snow Park up around the north side of Medicine Lake around Hoffman Mountain and into Four Corners Snow Park.  Please plan on at least 10 gallons of water for the second checkpoint.  Handlers keep in mind the driving time to each checkpoint may limit your ability to get supplies along the way, so bring everything you need when you leave.

Leg Three covers a distance of 31.9 miles from Four Corners South to the mandatory 2 hour rest stop at Pilgrim Creek.

Leg Four covers a distance of 25.4 miles.  You will depart out of Pilgrims Creek Snow Park to the finish at Deer Mountain / Chuck Best Snow Park.

Notes:

  • Handlers will be allowed to assist at each checkpoint, but will not be allowed to feed to dogs.

  • Dogs may not be boxed at each checkpoint/snow park. Blankets and/or jackets are OK.

  • If you need to drop dogs, you may do so at each checkpoint.

  • There are warming sheds at each checkpoint.

  • No straw will be allowed at the checkpoints.

  • A required equipment list will be in your Musher's packet and posted to the website when finalized.
